The Danger of Hollow Floor Tiles and How to Spot Them

Did you know hollow tiles can suddenly pop up and crack? Here is how you can check your flooring.

When contractors use poor quality cement mixture or don't apply it evenly, an air gap is left under the floor tile. This is called a hollow tile.

Why is it dangerous? Because over time, normal walking or placing heavy furniture will cause the tile to crack or pop out completely.

You can easily test this yourself by gently tapping the center and corners of your floor tiles with a coin or a light plastic handle. If it sounds 'empty' or like a drum, the tile is hollow.

During our inspections, we tap every single tile in the house. We often find entire rooms where the builder did a rushed job.

If caught before handover, the builder must remove the hollow tiles and lay new ones properly.
